Compare and Contrast Heaney’s Presentation of Death in the
Early Purges and Mid Term Break
The Early Purges and Mid Term Break both contain the same social significance; they both deal with the experiences of growing up and one of theses experiences being death. Both poems have the same attitude towards death this being that in one way or another death is inevitable. Heaney uses first person narration in both of these poems giving the poems a more personal feel to them. The associations of the titles in these two poems contrast; The Early Purges is a negative title and this agrees with the content of the poem whereas Mid-Term break contrasts dramatically with the poem; the title is positive but the poem is actually exceedingly negative.
The ‘Early Purges’ is a country expression for emptying ones bowels; this idea is about how ‘Dan Taggart’ treats the kittens but by the end of the poem when Heaney has grown up he sees the killing of the kittens as an acceptable thing to do. The poem recalls a particular incident from when Heaney was a boy; the first time young Heaney witnessed......
