The article Mr. Smith Goes to Tokyo: The Japanese Cinema Under the American Occupation, 1945-1952 gave the readers a good taste of Japanese life during the seven year American occupation. The article begins with a historical background of how the foreign occupation arose. The end of the war in the pacific not only brought about change for Japan, but also for the other Asian nations under Japan’s colonial rule. China, Korea and other Asian nations were now free from almost a century of colonial rule. Japan was now experiencing its first period of occupation in two thousand years. The seven year, Allied Powers occupation was from start to finish an American occupation. The Americans led by General Douglas MacArthur rebuilt Japan’s constitution by working as puppet masters through the existing Japanese government. The changes brought by the new American imposed constitution are still strongly felt in Japan.
