Another Way Home Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In literature, it is often presumed that a book that involves growing up in a black community will also involve the struggles of prevailing beyond unmerciful discrimination. In Another Way Home, the author, Ronne Hartfield, tells a different story, “Stories that balance the sorrowful truths of black life with the simple pleasures of growing up in a healthy black community” (xvi). Hartfield tells the story of her mother, Day Shepherd, and how growing up in a mixed race household was beneficial. Accordingly, various events throughout Day’s hardships and her experiences in New Orleans illustrate Ronne Hartfield’s claim that Day Shepherd’s family history provided her with a sense of identity. Serving as a character-forming experience, the death of Day’s parents was a turning point in her life. From the beginning, Day Shepherd was faced with the death of her mother. Ten years later, her father died, leaving her parentless, but not helpless. The passing of her parents developed the strong-willed characteristics that made Day.
