Another Way Home Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In literature, it is often presumed that a book that involves growing up in a black community will also involve the struggles of prevailing beyond unmerciful discrimination. In Another Way Home, the author, Ronne Hartfield, tells a different story, “Stories that balance the sorrowful truths of black life with the simple pleasures of growing up in a healthy black community” (xvi). Hartfield tells the story of her mother, Day Shepherd, and how growing up in a mixed race household was beneficial. Accordingly, various events throughout Day’s hardships and her experiences in New Orleans illustrate Ronne Hartfield’s claim that Day Shepherd’s family history provided her with a sense of identity.
Serving as a character-forming experience, the death of Day’s parents was a turning point in her life. From the beginning, Day Shepherd was faced with the death of her mother.
