The role of prophecy in the Aeneid Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Prophecy plays a very important role in the Aeneid. Throughout the poem, Vergil approaches the subject of prophecy in many creative ways, sending his prophecies in different formats, and also refraining from using just one person in the delivery of his prophecies. He uses prophecy to advance and develop the plot of the characters of both Aeneas and Turnus and also to assist in the audience’s understanding of the whole poem. He uses it to help in his attempt to emulate the epic style of Homer and also to provide a link between the world of Aeneas and Augustan Rome. There is much scholarly debate on whether one should adopt an “optimistic” or “pessimistic” view with regard to the prophecies of the Aeneid and I shall attempt to discuss both positions providing examples from the works of Elisabeth Henry and James O’Hara. With regards to prophecy being used to further advance and develop plot both Aeneas and Turnus become aware of their destinies through prophetic passages during the poem.
