Constitution of the United States Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The constitution as it was originally written in 1787 was not democratic, in my opinion. The definition of democracy is a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges or as other modern scholars define democracy as "as a system involving effective competition between political parties for positions of power” (Sastry). The five principles of democracy are equality in voting, effective participation, enlightened understanding, citizen control of agenda, and inclusion of all citizens. The constitution does not follow the 5 principles of democracy. According to Vivian Hart “A democratic constitution cannot be written for a nation, nor can one be written in haste” (Hart). Of course changes were made throughout the years to the Constitution to make it more democratic. Nowadays, the citizens of the United States have more input on constitutional amendments.
