The constitution as it was originally written in 1787 was not democratic, in my opinion. The definition of democracy is a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges or as other modern scholars define democracy as "as a system involving effective competition between political parties for positions of power� (Sastry). The five principles of democracy are equality in voting, effective participation, enlightened understanding, citizen control of agenda, and inclusion of all citizens. The constitution does not follow the 5 principles of democracy. According to Vivian Hart �A democratic constitution cannot be written for a nation, nor can one be written in haste� (Hart). Of course changes were made throughout the years to the Constitution to make it more democratic. Nowadays, the citizens of the United States have more input on constitutional amendments.
