Politics Essay The nature and definition of the notion of nationalism has for long been a subject of many debates. Over time the notion of nationalism has changed, evolved and developed into many forms and many theorists have used different explanations to explain this phenomenon. In this essay we explore two articles, Ernest Renan�s �What is a Nation?� edited by Arend Lijphart and E.J Hobshawm�s �Nations and Nationalism since 1780�. In both these articles the respective authors try to determine what the idea of �a nation� is and simultaneously addressing the problems with certain views. Ernest Renan places an emphasis on analysing the concept of nationalism through stressing objectivity. He states that today �we observe a grave error� by confusing the �terms race and nation� . Lipjhart emphasizes that the terms are fundamentally different and tries to take an impartial approach to explaining his view of �a nation�. Through comparison he dismisses the idea that nationalism is a direct result of the personification of a �family feudal origin� into a country�s basic principles, b......
