How does Blackwood create a sense of gothic horror in ‘the kit bag’? In lesson we have been studying the gothic horror story ‘the kit bag’. We have also been learning the conventions, styles and techniques used in it. Gothic Horror is a type of genre in English literature and unlike normal horror the author tries to scare the reader in more of a physiological way. In this quote, Blackwood tries to create a sense of horror from describing John Turk, the murderer as: “One of the most brutal cold blooded murderers of recent years” The word “brutal” creates the impression that Turk is a violent and vicious man who will stop at nothing. It also suggests he has no feelings and is extremely evil. By using the phrase “cold blooded” it portrays he is emotionless and feels no sense of guilt or remorse. Similarly Blackwood creates a sense of fear and horror through the description of the murdered body. Johnson explains: “The way the dismembered body was crammed and packed with lime into that” The phrase “dismembered” creates the impression that he was a ruthless killer, ......
