1.) What factors do you think were responsible for his win? In 1794, a very political race for the federal congressional seat from the city of Philadelphia left the city in a political uproar. Federalists had held this seat since the beginning of the new government. The two existing parties of the time period were the Federalists, and the Democratic-Republicans. Federalists during this time generally wanted a powerful central government, the establishment of a bank of the United States, and a more widely interpreted constitution. On the other hand, the Democratic-Republicans sought a strictly enforced constitution, a government with limited powers, and they did not want a national bank. Running for the Federalist Party was a congressman, Thomas Fitzsimons. Running for the Democratic-Republican Party was a wealthy merchant, John Swanwick. Swanwick ended up winning the elections leaving the federalists upset and angry.
