The short story �Boys and Girls� is an ironic tragedy illustrating a young girl struggling in our stereotypical world against society�s beliefs of how a girl should be and what she within would like to be. Before the story even begins in the title alone, �Boys and Girls;� we notice that boys of course are mentioned first. This gives us an excellent indication of what time and place, thus values and motives, we will see the author�s character contest throughout the story as well as convey an era when women began realizing what rights and equality they should stand for. The story portrays that as children we are genderless and essentially free in many aspects; however, as we grow older much of this freedom is taken away from us and even those who are consciously aware of this future deprivation will suffer. The theme freedom leaves us questioning what it truly is that progressively shapes the short story�s main character as well as our own characters.
