German Weapons of WWII Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The might of the German war machine during World War Two relied heavily on the training of the troops, but even more on the weapons with which they fought. They fought with small arms, tanks, and aircraft.
The small arms of the Wehrmacht (German infantry) were crucial to their success. The pistol was the sidearm of many officers and heavy gunners (machine gunners, anti-aircraft gunners, etc.) The first was the lesser known Mauser C96. The 96 means it was the model designed in 1896. It fired 7.63mm pistol bullets and had a twenty round magazine. It was highly inaccurate due to its light weight and high rate of fire (ROF.) It had a wooden stock that doubled as a holster. It had a rate of fire of 900 rounds per minute (rpm) and 15 rounds per second (rps). That means it emptied its magazine in less that two seconds! Not a smart idea. The second pistol was the P08 or “Luger” after its name sake, Goerg Luger. The “P” stands for Pistole and the “08” stands for “1908” (German Weapons of WWII, 1).
