Poverty and Liberty There is no question whether poverty exists in today�s society. It does. It exists whether we acknowledge it or ignore it. The living conditions for the poor are atrocious. John Galbraith describes poverty as �a physical matter; those afflicted have such limited and insufficient food, such poor clothing, such crowded, cold and dirty shelter that life is painful as well as comparatively brief� (251). Poverty is a problem in our society; it exists in every state and every city in America. Liberties will have to be sacrificed to remedy a problem as great as poverty. Milton and Rose Friedman define the meaning of equality of opportunity as: �No arbitrary obstacles should prevent people from achieving those positions for which their talents fit them and which their values lead them to seek. Not birth, nationality, color, religion, sex, nor any other irrelevant characteristic should determine the opportunities that are open to a person---only his abilities� (268).
