Many different types of people are considered to be leaders. The power to lead come from two main sources; position and personality. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest reveals many different aspects of power and leadership, however, power from personality and power from position vary significantly. Nurse Ratched had considerable power from her position as head nurse on the ward and over the inmates although her power was not respected. Similarly, Harding’s power was also from position, as the head of the patients council but his position was democratic. In contrast, Randel Patrick McMurphy’s power came from his persuasive, vibrant and confident personality.
