CASE STUDY
A baby boy was presented with respiratory distress upon birth. The history of the patient included an uneventful pregnancy and delivery. The patient was born at 39 weeks gestation and his weight and length were in the 50th percentile.
Immediately following delivery, the infant was intubated and a Replogle suction tube was placed to prevent saliva buildup. The breathing sounds were faint on the left side and the heart sounds were shifted rightward. Externally, the patient's abdomen and left hemi diaphragm appeared sunken as compared to the distended right chest cavity.
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia was suspected but breathing patterns suggested other differential diagnoses must be included. These were pulmonary sequestration (cystic growth within the lung) and neurogenic tumors of the mediastinum. Both conditions present similar respiratory difficulties by limiting one of the lung's ability to fill completely.
Radiographs, genetic tests, and echocardiograms were ordered to aid in the diagnosis. A single supine ......
