Turner syndrome Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Turner Syndrome, also known as TS, is a disease where a woman is missing or has one incomplete X chromosome. About one in 2,500 girls are affected by this medical problem at birth not knowing they have it. Turner Syndrome is not a disease that can be noticed right away. Women usually don’t know they have it until their early phases of puberty. Turner Syndrome prevents the proper development of ovaries, causing a defect in a girl’s sexual development. Most women diagnosed with Turner Syndrome have the average height of 4 feet and 7 inches. Women are the only ones who can be affected with Turner Syndrome. On normal terms, girls receive an X chromosome from both their mother and father. In this case, that second X chromosome is missing or incomplete. Turner Syndrome is usually cause by nondisjunction, when a pair of sex chromosomes fail to separate during the formation of an egg or sperm. In this case, if an abnormal egg forms with a normal sperm, the embryo will have a missing sex chromosome.
