�Assisi� by Norman MacCaig, the poet has created, by a number of poetic and linguistic techniques, a powerful lasting impression of the deformed beggar that the reader�s sympathy is easily engaged. MacCaig portrays the theme of the brutalising effects of reality by means of a number of techniques such as word choice, structure, imagery and the deployment of linguistic techniques. MacCaig opens the poem with a shocking image used to focus the readers attention to the harsh reality MacCaig is trying to convey; �Dwarf with his hands on backwards on tiny twisted legs on which sawdust might run� The poet uses this harsh, derogatory language in order to shock the reader and draw their attention to the deformed beggar. Use of imagery to describe the repulsive man which MacCaig is focusing on is effective in conveying how unsightly and malformed the beggar is.
