Laos Overview: �Laos, one of the world�s few remaining communist states, is one of East Asia�s poorest countries,� (Country profile: Laos l). The mountainous country is surrounded by land and large tropical forests located in Southeastern Asia. The country struggled to find its position within a changing political and economic landscape. Although, Laos began opening up to the world in the 1990s and despite cautious restructurings, it remains high on poverty and dependent on international donations. Majority of the people live without electricity and rely heavily on agriculture as their primary occupation for a living. Human rights in Laos have come under scrutiny. Quite a few small blasts in recent years in and around the capital, Vientiane, have suggested that opposition to the ruling party may be growing. However, the authorities used harsh punishment, including military forces and even mortalities against any public dissent.
