Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 21, 1833 to Immanuel and Caroline Nobel who had married in 1827. His family was very large, consisting of eight brothers and sisters of whom only four, including Alfred reached adulthood. Like many kids growing up, Alfred was interested in explosives, and since his father was an inventor and engineer he learned the fundamentals of engineering. Although Alfred�s father was very intelligent he never really succeeded at any of his business ventures until he moved to St. Petersburg, Russia in 1837 where the rest of his family joined him about five years later. It was in St. Petersburg that Alfred got to see his father Immanuel prosper creating and manufacturing explosive mines and machine tools. Since Immanuel had found his niche and was prospering, he could now afford private tutors for Alfred which he very happily accepted being the eager pupil that he was.
