Newton’s third law of motion states that for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction (Nigg & Herzog, 1999). While applicable in physics, to be applied in life the law needs a little revision. While the reaction may not be equal and it may not be opposite, there still will always be a reaction. Sometimes this reaction, or consequence, may be deserved, and at other times it may not be justified. As in modern day civilization, the same is true in Ancient Greek mythology: actions have consequences. In Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, Oedipus is forced to suffer through the consequences of his actions. In Euripedes’ Medea, Jason too must face the fate of the cards he dealt. But are these ‘reactions’ deserved? Oedipus gets dealt an unchangeable hand that delivers a fate he does not deserve for the simple fact that he has been misinformed and in certain instances, not informed at all.
