Literary Devices in Literature Literary devices have been used throughout the years to bring pieces of literature to life. They have improved novels, plays, scripts and all types of writing drastically. Among the many different types of literary devices, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams focuses on existentialism. It is a philosophy that emphasizes the isolation of an individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regarding human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts. Existentialism is well shown in the novel through the characters, dialogue and its portrayal of space.
