A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, was set in the “best of times" for some and the "worst of times" for others (9). The conditions in France and England were terrible. Alter states, “the most powerful imaginings of the novel reach out again and again to touch ultimate possibilities of violence, whether in the tidal waves of mass destruction or in the hideous inventiveness of individual acts of cruelty” (16). There was complete disregard for the common people by the aristocracy; injustice, cruelty, and oppression were rampant. However, in the midst of the chaos, the selflessness of the people lead to the belief that violence will be suppressed and a new and better society will emerge. Through his characters, Dickens effectively examines death, resurrection, and vengeance.
In the novel, human alienation and resurrection are presented through Dr. Manette and his daughter, Lucie Manette.
