In the book Snow in August by Peter Hamill, Michael Devlin is a curious, bright young boy who lives in a seedy neighborhood in Brooklyn in 1946. Growing up in such an environment makes Michael turn to his trusty comic books to look for heroes. Whether it is a wizard named Shazam or a superhero named Captain Marvel, Michael always had someone to aspire to be like in strength and power. But these seemingly powerful figures are nothing compared to the modern-day heroes seen through a child’s eyes in today’s world, whether they come through the airwaves or are seen in real life helping people every day. Children today have more heroes available to them than Michael Devlin did in 1946.
Media has influenced so much of our world today. When a child comes home from school, he most likely turns on the television and sits down to watch an episode of his favorite action-packed series. That is how easy it is for a youth to find a hero. Whether it is a Power Ranger on TV, Superman in a movie, or even a low-key character in a book, today’s children can turn anywhere in the media to find an idol. ......
