James Fleischhacker 10/11/06 Period 2 The Life of Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706. When he was 15 his brother started a newspaper. Benjamin wanted to cooperate in it but his brother didn�t want him to. So he disguised his name as Silence Dogood and wrote things for the news paper. People started wondering who the real Silence Dogood was then Benjamin confessed, but his brother was mad and jealous of the attention that people gave to him. A few years later his brother went to jail and when he got out he wasn�t grateful that Benjamin kept the newspaper going. He occasionally harassed him and beat him. Soon Benjamin grew tired of it and ran away. Running away was illegal. In early America, people all had to have a place in society and runaways did not fit in anywhere. Regardless Ben took a boat to New York hoping to work as a printer. He wasn�t a printer until a while later. In 1736, he organized Philadelphia's Union Fire Company, the first in the city.
