(b) Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Moore’s Institutionalism. G.E. Moore’s (1873-1958) argument in Principia Ethica is a defense of ethical non-naturalism; like many philosophers before him, Moore analyses the meaning of the term "good" and concludes that it is simply indefinable, because it names a simple, non-natural property. He argues that ethical naturalism makes an error, and that moral statements cannot be established by looking at empirical evidence (confirmation gained through our senses). This mistake is known as the ‘Naturalistic Fallacy.’ However, Moore asserts that moral propositions are based on an perfect intuitive knowledge of good things. For example, one may assist a fatally injured person, desperate for help and recognize the sheer comfort and delight it bought on their face. One would consider this act to be ‘good.’ Moore on the other hand, rejects this idea and states this is committing a misleading notion or ‘fallacy’, as we are only judging peoples emotions via our senses.
