Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among people age 65 and older. Dementia is the loss of memory, reason, judgment, and language that can disrupt a person's daily life and activities. (Unraveling, 2006, 4) This paper will examine the causes and the possible factors that can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease in the United States is expected to double every year for the next 50 years because of the movement of the “baby boomers” into age group of 65 and older. (Progress, 2004, 4) As my parents are part of that demographic group, I am concerned and fascinated about the disease that has eluded cure in an age of such advanced technology. My initial questions asked about its prevalence in the elderly as well as whether it was recognizable earlier in life. These questions finally led to a hypothesis to address how it is caused.
