In Macbeth, one of the most often occurring themes is "fair is foul and foul is fair." This theme occurs during all types of scenes throughout the story, and is mainly centered around the main character, Macbeth. There are other, minor themes such as violence, hallucination, prophecy, that tie into, and also support the larger theme "fair is foul". The theme of "fair is foul" is all about deception and appearance vs. reality. For example, most of the violence of the play takes place offstage, which gives it a sense of mystery, being that the exact details of a violent event is unknown to the reader makes it easy to create false assumption sabout the actual activities of an event. Other aspects of the play are also somewhat unclear, such as the witches' prophecies for Macbeth. Although they seem good at first, they actually ended up predicting his downfall. The theme "fair is foul and foul is fair," suggests that there are different aspects to everything, meaning that things that appear positive can often have negative qualities to them, and vise versa.
