Donne�s poetry is said to have a distinctive blend of strong emotion and intellectual perception. Unlike many of the Petrarchan poets, who portrayed love simply as a state of mind, where the lady was idealized, Donne effectively used the dominant form of his time and varied it to portray his own message of love. Donne invites the reader to marvel at his portrayal of the transcendent qualities of love through his impudent witticisms and intellectual argument. However, taking into account the concepts of postmodernism, which challenges the concepts of absolute truth, it is possible to develop an alternative reading, challenging the ideology of the text. This reading is based on the notion that Donne�s poetry is lacking in emotional content due to the fact that in his poetry he is too concerned with proving its cleverness.
