EXAMINING THE ISSUES WELFARE �Poverty; deprivation, scarcity, inferiority, poorness.� Poverty is a term most frequently used to describe countries such as Africa and other poor nations, but is commonly ignored in countries such as our own. In an Australian Bureau of Statistics Occasional Paper, data showed that in Australia there were over 105,000 people homeless on the 1996 census night. This population is not all suffering because of poverty, but it is certainly a source. The growing prevalence of homelessness in Australia demonstrates the signs of increasing poverty levels and an unequal society. The government and the wealthy population of Australia should be providing more support for the less-fortunate, to decrease this statistic. Homelessness is a major issue in Australia and is a problem that a society like Australia can solve with extra funding, diligence from service workers and the local community.
