Realism in American Literature Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The years following the Civil War symbolize a time of great change in American literature. Before the War most American literature fell under the category of romanticism. Romantic writers used plot to state their ideas of how mankind has control over his own destiny. The literature of romanticism never focused on aspects of real life. Instead it celebrated the ability of human will to triumph over adversity. However, starting in 1865 a new style of writing began to emerge called realism. Led by writer William Dean Howells, who is credited with being the first realist writer, realism began to take off. Unlike romanticism, realism focuses on the details of everyday life. Realists believed that freedom of choice was limited by the power of outside forces. In American literature, the term realism covers the period of time from the Civil War to the turn of the century during which writers such as William Dean Howells, and Mark Twain, wrote about the accurate representation of the common man.
