September 14, 2006 Article Review #2 Drug Abuse in Schools One of the public�s top concerns about schools, rated number four in a nationwide poll in 1999 is drug use. Although this subject would have never been mentioned in the past, it was brought to the forefront when deaths of several prominent public figures, such as athletes and musicians, were emphasized in the news. There have been programs proposed and used to help this growing problem. Some schools have even included regular searches and urine tests in their routine (Ballantine 2001). In 2005 edition of The Journal of Drug Education, the article �Adolescent�s Beliefs about Marijuana Use: A Comparison of Regular Users, Past Users and Never/Occasional Users� by Bernarnd Plancherel investigated the real thoughts of teens on this subject. A questionnaire was administered to 163 adolescents and young adults, ages 13 to 20. The group was comprised of 96 boys and 67 girls who were asked their opinions and experiences concerning substance abuse.
