Scott and Martha�s families differ in many ways � the most obvious is how different their adaptation of the modern world is and how they treat their children. Martha is used to physical and violent punishment which she has grown to expect. It is very old fashioned and cruel. �Father lost his temper and slapped my face. Mother said something to him on the stairs and he came back. I was curled up on the bed crying.� This shows that Martha�s family is old-fashioned. Her mother is not the one to beat her but is seen as a peace maker- �Mother said something to him on the stairs�. Her father is seen as the one in charge, which was a tradition ages ago, he obviously believes he is free to treat his child in any way he wants. �Curled up on the bed� suggests that Martha seems to want to be invisible and insignificantly small to the world. Scott�s family allow him to be more free and adapted to the modern technologies.
