The history of Afghanistan is in so many ways a very tragic story. Afghanistan is one of the most poverty stricken, war torn and ravaged nations in all the world and things don�t look like getting any better. Afghanistan has had a huge history of invasion and civil upheavals which have left the once great nation scared and it�s citizens impoverished. Afghanistan is situated between Central Asia, the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent. Therefore, the population of Afghanistan is quite large and made up of many different nationalities. Its multicultural society is the result of thousands of years of invasions and migrations. At the present time, there are at least 12 major ethnic groups spread out amongst the population. These are Baluch, Chahar Aimak, Turkmen, Hazara, Pashtun, Tajik, Uzbek, Nuristani, Arab, Kirghiz, Pashai and Persian. Of these ethnic groups, Pashtun is the most prominent representing around 50% of the total population, including Amir and his father Baba in Khaled Hosseini's debut novel �The Kite Runner�.
