The vitality and economic growth of the United States is linked to affordable transportation. In comparison to most countries, the United States is sparsely populated and development is pursued assuming access to transportation. This primarily involves highways, but also includes rail lines, airports, and marine terminals. The interstate highway system made large-scale freight movement possible by truck and facilitated the ability of everyone to see the country by car. The availability of good roads and inexpensive fuel resulted in the development of large cars without much regard for fuel efficiency. The decade of the 1960s was one of the most productive in U.S. history, due in part to a thriving automotive industry and inexpensive petroleum fuels. This situation came to a rapid end in 1974 when the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) dramatically raised the price of crude oil.
