Secrets amongst Women Alice Walker�s �In Search of our Mother�s Gardens� is as much about discovering one�s heritage as Mona Lisa Smile is about defying it. Women in both works hold that discovery of rebellion within themselves as secrets. We all know how hard it is to keep emotions bottled up inside, so eventually it all has come out somehow. It may have been sacred then, when there were rules against an African American opening up her mind to art (reading, writing, etc.) and rich white women being truly �happy�, but times have changed and secrets are out! Black women who were enslaved by white people went about their lives subconsciously, �unaware of the riches they held.� The women worked all day out in the fields, followed orders, sweat tears of pain, and thought of themselves as unworthy. They were abused by men who treated them as a �sexual object� and as wild beasts not knowing what their great minds really held.
