Nathaniel Hawthorne is very big on characterization in many of his novels, including The Scarlet Letter. He develops his characters in a way to help the reader understand each character on a personal level. Hawthorne�s ability to develop his characters well is seen in how the reader�s perception of Hester Prynne changes from the beginning to the end of the novel. Hester is portrayed in many ways throughout the novel, the first being �this sinner� (Hawthorne 56). The �fantastic letter A� on her chest is a constant reminder, as it is pointed out on many occasions, that the reader is to remember Hester�s sin and hold it against her forever (Hawthorne 53). She wears this letter A as a consequence of her sin, adultery. She also has to stand on the town scaffold; she is publicly humiliated because of the �scarlet letter [that is] so fantastically embroidered�upon her bosom� (Hawthorne 53).
