Introduction For many years St. Mark�s Gospel was probably the least studied of the four gospels. After all, it has not got so much glamorous teaching as has Matthew�s nor has it got Luke�s wonderful human stories. Mark is also quite a bit shorter. Almost everything in it you can find in the other gospels. However in the twentieth century, the pendulum has swung and most modern scholarship has become convinced that Mark�s is the first gospel to be written. There is a great deal of interest shown in it partly because it is the earliest and so it may be the case that it is more accurate about Jesus historically than the others who borrowed from Mark. Whatever the case is on that subject, and I believe that probably Mark is the most accurate; it is a strikingly original portrait that comes out from Mark and one with messages for us today. We look first at what sort of book this gospel of Mark is. A straightforward reading of the book shows first of all that it is vivid and fast moving. Probably it was designed to be read aloud to an audience, as were many books in the ancient world. ......
