Blake includes symbols in Holy Thursday to criticize people who fail to improve the lives of children. This is his ultimate mission and his critical tone is apparent in nearly every situation involving apathetic authority. His loathing for these figures is a major theme in Songs of Innocence and this passage in particular.
Blake places symbols of authority in the passage to show how they fail to improve the lives of the children. When Blake describes the beadles as “Grey-headed,” and carrying “Wands white as snow,” grey and white are his symbols for something or someone that lacks action or initiative. In this way, he characterizes the beadles as hypocritical for their effort to help the children by allowing them to enter the church one day a year, and then throwing them back onto the street. By understanding these symbols the reader sees the larger hidden meaning within Blake’s poem.
