Family Health Nursing In the last twenty years of nursing the focus in caring for patients has changed dramatically. This change is due to the changing family. The family has changed due to changes in society (Friedman, Marilyn M., Bowden, Vicky R., Jones, Elaine G., 2003, p30). The single patient has changed from medical needs plus what the patient views as important including their family. In my own experience in nursing, years ago the patient was the primary focus only. Now it takes a family to heal a patient. For patients to improve their health or to maintain wellness we as nurses have to look at the whole picture. What is the whole picture? The whole picture is what it takes to achieve a basic balance in the lives of our patients. Our goal as nurses is to meet the needs of our clients. This goal has two key points that years ago were different. We now consider the needs of the patient and those involved with the patient.
