The American legal system is an extremely complex web of people performing different tasks. There is the police force, the lawyers, the jurors, and the judges. Each of these separate entities intersects every day and they must do so in such a way that is effective. These seemingly separate units do, however, share several basic values that must be adhered to in order for them to function cohesively. There are three main basic aspects of the American legal system that are crucial: competence, trust, and the ability to make important decisions. Just as important as those core values are certain characteristics that must be mentioned when defining the legal system as an �American� one. Competence is defined as a having sufficient means for the necessities of the task at hand. In this case, this task is the trial by a jury of one�s peers. Primarily, the police must be competent in order to suspect and question the right people to ascertain the truth t of the situation.
