Obesity: A Part of American Culture There is a huge epidemic sweeping our nation. No one can hide from it as it is affecting children, adolescents, and adults. This disease was solely responsible for 11,909 deaths last year (McHugh 264). This number will continue to grow as more and more people become at risk for it. The disease is obesity and besides cigarettes, is the most preventable cause of death. The reason this disease has become blown out of proportion is because of the growing number of overweight persons in this country. Our population is increasing in girth at rapid rates, with 75% of adults and 20% children already overweight (Crespo and Arbesman 24). Over the last few years, we have seen the American people attempt to combat this disease. There have been increases in diet program attendance, health club memberships, and sporting good store sales (French et al. 323). So, why are we continuing to see an increase in the amount of overweight people in the U.S.?
