Which methods did he use to stay in power for such a long time? Was the population frightened by him or were the people really enthusiastic about his changes in Russian society? How the international community was looking at his system? We can say that all his policies (industrial, agricultural, social and foreign) were aimed to maintain the leader�s position in order to make the population enthusiastic and scared at the same time. Russia was both heaven and hell, a mixed diet of terror and illusion : Stakhanovism, patriotism, devotion to the leader, hopes for the future, huge industrial and military growth, but also corruption, arrests, purges, gulags and terror.
