Eleanor Roosevelt Eleanor Roosevelt was the “Lady Diana” of her time. A humanitarian, held in reverence by the millions and millions of people whose lives she touched. Though she was the 32nd first lady of the White House, she definitely did not fit the mold. Like most first ladies she had a deep love for her children, all six of them and without a doubt she was greatly devoted to her husband. Yet, she held press conferences, traveled to all parts of the country, gave lectures and radio broadcasts, and expressed her opinions candidly in a daily syndicated newspaper column, "My Day." Mrs. E was also an author who wrote a book in 1933 titled Its up to the Women and another in 1949, This I Remember. Both publications urged women to campaign for “fairness” and “decency.” By the time Eleanor was eight-years-old, she was an orphan and was sent to live with her grandmother.
