In this paper I will be summarizing the article Killing Her Softly: Intimate Abuse and the Violence of State Intervention, by Professor Linda G. Mills. After that I will give my thoughts about the author�s main points. In the article, Professor Mills argues that we need to reconsider the feminist position that mandatory interventions in domestic violence cases, including mandatory arrest, prosecution, and reporting, serve the best interests of all battered women. After reviewing the findings from some of her studies, Professor Mills concluded that battered women were safest and felt respected the most when they willingly partnered with state actors to investigate and prosecute domestic violence crimes. She said that clinically speaking, a battered woman needs a healing response to the intimate abuse, one that nurtures her strengths and empowers her to act. Mandatory state interventions, however not only disregard these clinical concerns, but also are in danger of causing the abused to feel her pain she once felt over again.
