CANCER: A cellular malignancy whose unique trait loss of normal controls results in unregulated growth, lack of differentiation, and ability to invade local tissues and metastasis. (Merck Manual 1992, pg. 1263) Cancer can develop in any tissue of any organ at any age. Most cancers if detected at an early stage are potentially curable; thus, physicians need a heightened awareness of predisposing inherited and environmental factors. A complete history and physical examination are prerequisites to early diagnosis and may also allow staging of a patient�s cancer. When a physician performs an examination they need to focus on lymph nodes, lungs, breasts, abdomen, and to rectal and vaginal examinations. The patient should actively participate in the recognition of early signs of malignancy; cooperation in self-examination and in acceptance of diagnosis tests and therapy is essential for optimal results.
