The great plague of the fourteenth century was known as the Black Death, or Bubonic Plague. It was known in history as having killed almost one third of Europe�s population. This plague caused extreme hardship and suffering throughout the European society along with drastic changes in almost every aspect of European society, especially the Church. The Black Death was a pandemic that surged throughout the entire continent. In October of 1347, a merchant ship returned from China and entered the Sicilian port of Messina. Unknowingly the people of Messina welcomed this ship back into the harbor, but were horrified to find most of the crew dead or dying. The people of Messina tried to quarantine the ship, but it had no effect. The many rats that were also on the ship, were infected with the plague, and carried the disease into the city; the pandemic began. Many Christians during this time believed that the cause of the Plague �was the wrath of God�(Chambers 307),while others �blamed the Jew for poisoning the wells� (Chambers 307).
