A play can provide many ends. It is often designed to amuse, educate, inspire, influence, and even shock. But whatever the objectives of the director, performers, and crew, the result frequently depends on the interaction with an audience. The audience for plays is distinct from the reader of a novel or the viewer of a painting in that it gathers as a group at a given time and place to share in the performance with the actors and all the surrounding elements of light, sound, music, costumes and scenery. The audience affects the performance by providing the performers with immediate feedback, such as laughter, tears, applause or silence. In my opinion the production of The New Hardware Store did not fully achieve the true effect of a play. The New Hardware Store is set in Trinidad, West Indies, roughly in the late 1970s. This was the period subsequent to the Black Power uprising. (The Black Power Uprising signified both a climax of the decade’s civil rights movement and a retort against the racism that continued despite the labours of black activists.)
