Modern Myth � Hispanics and Immigration The recent Hispanic protest on May 1, 2006 fueled contention in workplaces throughout the United States and sparked my curiosity about immigration. Hispanics are teaming to America at a bizarre rate of speed. They have become the largest minority surpassing African-Americans last year. Flocking to the United States (U.S.) mainly from Mexico, today there are 39 million Hispanics in America including some 8 million illegal immigrants here. Half of all new workers in the U.S. in the past decade are Hispanic and it is expected to increase from 12 percent of today's work force to nearly 25 percent within the next two generations (American Immigration Center, 2006). Even though fervent political support exists to firm up border enforcement, proposed changes to our legal immigration system appear far more controversial. Supporters of stern restrictions on legal immigration fail to make convincing cases for their necessity. They typically rely on traditional myths that are easily discredited.
