The Civil war, sometimes called the War Between the States, took place from 1861 to 1865. The battles took place from the Mississippi River to the east coast. The Civil War was started because the South left the North to try and preserve slavery, but the North didn�t want slavery, therefore the war was started. In March of 1863 Congress passed a draft law saying all men between the ages of 20-45 had to serve for 3 years. However the law favored the rich men, because any man who could afford a $300 commutation fee or could hire a substitute would not serve the 3 years. In April 1862 the Confederate Congress passed a draft law, which favored the rich men also, because you could buy your way out of the draft or if you owned 20 slaves you wouldn�t have to fight either. The Union had a better victory because they gained human freedom, rather than the South trying to preserve slavery.
