Odysseus' Journey throughout the Odyssey Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Odysseus’ Journey Home In Homer’s The Odyssey, the main goal of Odysseus’ journey is to return home safely to his wife and son, and regain the power of his kingdom that he had been swept away from twenty years earlier. During his incredibly strenuous journey, Odysseus faces many issues that, could defer him from trudging on, yet he keeps the hope that he will, someday, return home. Also in dealing with these problems that keep arising, Odysseus proves himself to be a brave hero. Mostly all of the trials and tribulations that Odysseus faces are brought on by circumstances that are out of his control, such as the actions of his crew, for example. One of Odysseus's biggest challenges is to resist temptation. The first temptation Odysseus and his men encounter is the island of the sweet lotus plant. Fagles writes, "So off they went and soon enough they mingles among the natives, Lotus-eaters, Lotus-eaters who had no notion of killing my companions, not at all, they simply gave them the lotus to taste instead…" (9.102-105).
