A comparison between Franz kafta's Metamorphosis and Herman Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Metamorphosis written by Franz Kafta and Bartleby, the Scrivener written by Herman Melville can be compared in their characterization of the protagonists, Gregor Samsa and Bartleby. Both of these short stories, through these two characters explore the concepts of materialism, alienation and personal sacrifice. When analyzing the two short stories a common theme that is represented is the fierce cycle of materialism. Both characters in different ways have been cast into a society in which money is the focus. Both characters work in tedious jobs which brings them little personal satisfaction. They are surrounded by people that care little for the emotional bonds between people, but who are driven by the wants of material objects. Gregor Samsa, the protagonist in The Metamorphosis, was the main source of income in his family. After his father lost his job, the family became dependant on Gregor to keep the family a float.
