Of Mice and Men Character Analysis: Candy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the novella, Of Mice and Men, many characters are isolated from the environment that they live in such as Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Slim. However, the most obvious character that is isolated from the rest of society is Candy. Throughout the novella, Candy constantly shows signs of being isolated from the rest of the ranch. Candy’s mindset, actions, and physical appearance make him alienated from the characters and the rest of society. One way that Candy is the most isolated in the story is by having physical appearances that unable him to do certain things. Candy is also a very old man, which means he cannot do some of the things that people such as Lennie and George can do. By being an older man, even Steinbeck describes him as, “The old swamper” (18). This shows the amount of respect that Candy gets from all of the characters. This is saying that just because he is short one limb, that he gets assigned all of the jobs that are somewhat grubby.
